Public Information Officer Training Programs
The Training & Education Committee has arranged for four Public Information Officer (PIO) Training Programs beginning in February of 2008 and concluding by April 2008.

This half-day program has been designed by Rob Leonard, Chair of The FASNY Public Relations Committee, to train fire and EMS personnel in the basic techniques required to serve as PIO. 

The course will contain:

  • Intro to Public Relations
  • PR for Fire and EMS Providers
  • Intro to Media: Types and Tips
  • PIO Role and Duties
  • How to Write a  Press Release
  • Publicize and Plan Your Press Conference
  • Hands-on Participatory Simulated Press Relations Activities

Classes will be held in the following counties: Orange County, Onondaga County, Saratoga County and Erie County. Stay tuned for dates as they are confirmed.

“CSI, New York: Crash Scene Investigation”
This 3 hour seminar will focus on four crash scene investigations involving emergency services personnel in four key situations: a vehicle rollover, an intersection collision, a highway incident and a situation involving an emergency responder in a personal vehicle.

“Hazardous Materials/WMD Awareness & Scene Safety”
The HAZMAT Committee has announced: “Hazardous Materials/WMD Awareness & Scene Safety” class on February 23, 2008 at the Keeseville Fire Department, Keeseville, NY (Essex/Clinton Counties). Registration will open at 8:30 a.m.; class starts at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at 3:00 p.m. (light luncheon will be served). Cost is $5 for FASNY members and $15 for non-FASNY members with pre-registration, or $20 at the door regardless of membership status. Go to www.fasny.com to register. Pre-registrations must be received by Monday, February 18, 2008.

“Hybrid Vehicle Safety Training”
The Ulster County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, in conjunction with FASNY, is pleased to announce:  “Hybrid Vehicle Safety Training” at Wallkill Middle School, Wallkill, NY (Ulster County) on March 29: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; Cost: $10 with pre-registration, $15 at the door.  Coffee, pastry and light lunch will be provided. “Managing a Haz-Mat Incident: Are You Ready?”
This course addresses an overview of hazardous materials: the basic
concept of operations for a Haz-Mat/WMD incident, the decision-making
process as well as size-up, hazard assessment and risk evaluation for the
First Responder.

Fire Codes of New York State - Fire Protection Systems
With ICC Regional Manager Bruce Johnson

This six-hour course provides basic knowledge of the fire protection systems code requirements as contained in the 2007 Fire Code of New York State and Building Code of New York State. The course is based on 2003 IFC and IBC with New York State enhancements.

The program addresses the Fire Code requirements relating to fire-protection systems, including:

  • the most common types of automatic sprinkler systems
  • alternative automatic extinguishing systems
  • standpipe systems

An overview of the types of fire alarm and detection systems and smoke control systems is provided. Discussed will be additional means to assist or enhance the fixed fire protection systems, such as kitchen hoods and fire extinguishing systems and portable fire extinguishers.

Presenter Bruce Johnson is a Regional Manager for Fire Service Activities with the International Code Council, joining ICC staff in September 2007.  Formerly, he held the position of Senior Fire Marshal for Riverhead Town (Long Island, NY), from April 1998 to September 2007.  He is currently a part-time Deputy Fire Chief Instructor for the Suffolk County Fire Academy.  Chief Johnson is also a Fire Science Instructor in the Bachelors Program at SUNY-Empire State College.  He is a Nationally Certified Fire Instructor, Nationally Certified Fire Investigator and New York State Certified Fire and Building Code Official.  Chief Johnson is a past president and active member of the NY State Fire Marshals & Inspectors Association.  He has a diverse background in building and fire code administration and enforcement; fire suppression; training and management. Chief Johnson holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Dowling College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Service Administration from SUNY -Empire State College.

Handling Propane Emergencies

This course will involve both classroom and hands-on training activities. Participation will assist registrants in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively operate at fixed site or transportation emergencies involving propane.

This is a "need-to-know" course for Training Officers, Safety Officers and anyone in the department that would be responsible for handling a propane emergency.

  • All participants are required to provide OSHA-approved full turnout gear.
  • Every participant must have SCBA, and a spare tank is recommended.
  • No Explorers or Juniors may participate in the live burn training.
  • Three-hour OSHA credit will be awarded.
