November 16, 2009
(NEW YORK) – Carl Steffen of Tupper Lake in Franklin County, whose long firefighting career runs from rookie volunteer to an advisor to the Governor, has been re-elected a Trustee of the Firemen’s Home for retired volunteer firefighters in Hudson, NY. Steffen, a 41-year veteran firefighter, was unanimously chosen for a second five-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Firemen’s Home at the recent annual FASNY Convention in Niagara Falls.
FASNY has maintained the Firemen’s Home for retired volunteer firefighters since 1892. Most recently, the Home occupies a newly constructed and uniquely hotel-style residence and medical facility. Steffen has served on several of its key committees, including Chairman of its extensive building and grounds, and Vice Chair of Personnel.
He is also a 22-year member of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department, having risen through the ranks to serve three terms as Chief of Department, and for 19 years as Fire Investigator. At the County level, he has been a Deputy Fire Coordinator for 18 years, a Cause-and-Origin Fire Investigator, and member of the Hazmat Unit. In addition, he is also a member of the County’s Fire Chiefs Association and of the County Fire Advisory Board.
Steffen is a part-time fire instructor for the State’s Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC), and a member of the Governor’s Fire and Life Safety Advisory Board. At the regional level, Steffen is a past president of the Northern N.Y. Firemen’s Association, and also a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Aside from his duties at the Firemen’s Home, Steffen has also served on FASNY’s Fire Prevention and Life Safety & Standards and Codes Committee, and the FASNY Foundation.
Professionally, Steffen is a 29-year career public safety member of the State Office of Mental Health, and currently, the agency’s Chief of Safety and Code Enforcement Officer.
