NY honors two CNY firefighters who died decades ago

October 6, 2009

Albany (WSYR-TV) – It was a long-overdue thank you from Albany for two central New York firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Way back in 1901, Cazenovia's James Hugh Martin died several weeks after he was hurt fighting a house fire.
In 1936, Moravia Fire Chief Edward Coiley was killed when he fell under the wheels of a fire truck on the way to answer a call.

The men's names were inscribed on a wall memorializing all New York firefighters who have died trying to save others. Though they were killed nearly a century ago, family members were in Albany Tuesday to see how Martin and Coiley's sacrifice has not been forgotten.

In all, there were 12 New York firefighters honored Tuesday, hailing from cities and towns all over the state. Most had died within the last few years.

There are more than 2,300 names inscribed on the Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial, and Tuesday, flags on the State Capitol complex were flown at half-staff to honor them.

The monument is located at the Empire Plaza in Albany, and was dedicated in 1999.
