Dr. Richard Gasaway has served as a firefighter, EMT-paramedic, company officer and chief officer in six emergency services organizations in West Virginia, Ohio and Minnesota. In addition to his exemplary 30-year career in public safety, Dr. Gasaway has completed extensive studies on the high-stress, high-consequence environments first responders operate in and how stress impacts decision making and situational awareness. His findings have been chronicled in more than 250 books, book chapters, training videos, webinars, podcasts and first responder journals.
Two of Dr. Gasaway’s first responder safety programs, Mental Management of Emergencies and Fifty Ways to Kill a First Responder have been presented to more than 23,500 public safety providers throughout North America, Europe and Asia. In 2011, Dr. Gasaway created Situational Awareness Matters! A website dedicated to helping first responders see the bad things coming in time to change the outcome.
