Your Year Round Resource for Fire Prevention

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) strongly supports educating firefighters and schools on how to promote fire prevention and life safety within the community. This site was designed with firefighters and educators in mind, to be your year round resource for fire prevention and life safety. Please use and share the information, materials and ideas provided here to enhance the development of fire prevention programs within your fire departments and schools.

Knowledge of fire prevention and life safety procedures and techniques will greatly reduce injuries, deaths and loss of property. Please help us with this effort to advance safety awareness in our community.

Fire Safety Tip:
  • Change batteries in smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detectors when you change the time on your clock.
  • Observe all safety precautions for outdoor burning as wildfire season begins in the spring. DO NOT burn anything outside until you check with your local Codes Inspector, Fire Chief or Forest Ranger.
  • With Spring comes the increase usage of power equipment. Follow safety precautions for all equipment and especially USE CAUTION with gasoline, oil and chemicals.
  • Check smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detector batteries monthly.
  • When using electric heaters do not run cords under rugs.
  • Do not use any heater to dry clothes.
  • When using electric heater and a circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows stop using heater and have it checked by a professional.
  • Use fireplace screen in front of fireplaces to prevent sparks from flying out.
  • Use only seasoned wood in fireplaces or wood stoves & have them inspected by a professional regularly.
  • Make sure any fire in fireplace or wood stove is out before leaving house or going to bed.
